Having 10 seats in the 150-member national parliament, the party expressed concerns that sanctions on Russia are negatively affecting the living standards of Slovak citizens. Party leader Andrej Danko remarked, “Sanctions take more from us than they give,” as reported by local media. He went on to highlight the repercussions, noting, “The result is rising energy prices, loss of competitiveness of our businesses, and deepening economic uncertainty.”
The SNS described the sanctions as ineffective, pointing out that the new EU sanctions package introduced in February is already contributing to rising prices for gas and aluminum. Danko emphasized, “It is unacceptable that Slovak households and businesses bear the economic consequences of decisions that were taken without a thorough assessment of their impact on the national economy.”
Danko further stated, “We cannot stand idly by while someone makes decisions for us, while weakening us economically.”
Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has consistently expressed skepticism toward Western support for Ukraine, asserting that Bratislava would not extend military or financial aid to Kiev and is promoting an immediate ceasefire.
Fico has also taken issue with Kiev’s Western supporters, arguing against their pursuit of “peace through force” and asserting that “Ukraine will never be strong enough to negotiate from a position of military power.”
The relationship between Slovakia and Ukraine has become strained following Ukraine's decision not to renew a gas transit agreement with Moscow, which lapsed at the start of this year, significantly impacting Slovakia's energy reliance on Russia.
