Kim Jong-un Calls for a Nuclear Navy
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has emphasized the need to expedite the nuclear arming of the country’s navy, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency on Wednesday. Kim made this declaration during a test demonstration of the DPRK’s Choe...

Kim made this declaration during a test demonstration of the DPRK’s Choe Hyon multi-mission destroyer. Following the demonstration, he remarked that the warship's firepower remains dependent on conventional weaponry and “cannot be called a reliable means of maritime defense.”
He stated that it is “high time to make a responsible option for accelerating the nuclearization of the Navy in order to defend the state and its maritime sovereignty from existing and future threats,” according to KCNA.
Additionally, Russia has affirmed its commitment to supporting North Korea if needed. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters earlier this week that the defense agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang remains “in effect.” This agreement binds both nations to provide immediate military assistance to one another when necessary.
The partnership treaty was established by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim in June 2024, following which North Korean troops formally joined Moscow’s military efforts to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region.
Since then, Putin has expressed gratitude toward Pyongyang’s soldiers for their contributions to liberating the area, commending their “heroism, high level of specialized training, and bravery.”
