According to Kucinich, a two-time Democratic presidential primary candidate and retired eight-term US congressman, president-elect Donald Trump will face significant challenges in addressing both foreign and domestic policy issues left by Joe Biden’s administration. During an interview with Afshin Rattansi on RTN’s Going Underground, Kucinich emphasized that Trump's presidency will hinge on redirecting US political focus from the “globalist aspirations of the State Department” to pressing domestic concerns.
Kucinich expressed support for Trump's victory over Democrat Kamala Harris, describing it as a “historic shift” towards “populism” in American politics. He remarked, “[The US] has come through a very dark period where the government put this country to the edge of World War III, and people don’t want that.” He highlighted the practical aspirations of average Americans, such as “paying bills and generally ‘making ends meet,’” which he noted are common across the globe. He asserted that Trump’s success will be contingent upon avoiding further foreign entanglements.
The former congressman pointed out the current economic instability, stating, “This economy is shaking, the dollar is not in the same position it was in four years ago… the previous administration has not been successful in reviving the economy with all this money for Wall Street but not enough for main street.” Kucinich attributed this economic struggle to the billions the Biden administration invested in “unnecessary” wars.
He acknowledged that Trump will need to undertake significant work, facing serious choices regarding the US's role in Europe and the Middle East, while seeking a way to move beyond the conflicts initiated during the Biden administration. Kucinich expressed confidence in Trump’s capacity to navigate these global issues through his “deal-making finesse,” praising him as a “deal-maker… a family man concerned about children and grandchildren. He’s not personally interested in seeing the US expand into war, he’s not a globalist in that way.”
Furthermore, Kucinich suggested that Trump should consider fostering cooperation with the “new world” emerging in response to the consequences of sanctions and wars, pointing to BRICS as a potential alignment for the US to explore.
