The Sudanese Armed Forces announced on Wednesday that they have taken control of Khartoum International Airport, which had been under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023. They have also secured other strategic locations in the capital.

"We have taken control of Khartoum International Airport," stated SAF operations commander in Khartoum, Mohamed Abdul-Rahman Al-Belawi, as reported by Al-Jazeera.

"Ground units of the Sudanese army have successfully taken control of Khartoum International Airport and fully secured it," a military source disclosed to Xinhua News Agency on the condition of anonymity.

In addition, SAF spokesman Nabil Abdalla released a statement indicating that SAF forces "have seized control of the militia camp Taiba Al-Hasanab in Jabal Awliya city, which is the militia's main camp and its last stronghold in Khartoum."

He added that the RSF's remaining presence now consists of scattered "small pockets," which will be dealt with shortly.

Abdalla also mentioned in a separate statement that the SAF has made strides in areas east of Khartoum, taking control of the first infantry brigade headquarters located in the Al-Bagair area at the border between Khartoum and Gezira states. The SAF and its allied forces have reportedly inflicted significant losses on the RSF in terms of both equipment and personnel.

Additionally, video footage shared by army soldiers on social media depicted army units stationed along Al-Siteen Street, a crucial road linking the eastern, southern, and central regions of Khartoum.

The conflict in Sudan between the SAF and RSF has been ongoing since mid-April 2023.

On Thursday, the RSF claimed to have taken control of the Al-Malha area, which holds strategic importance due to its control over critical trade routes between Sudan and Libya and serves as a key junction leading to the capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan.

The following day, the SAF announced that it had regained control of the presidential palace located in central Khartoum.

On Tuesday, the SAF released a map publicly for the first time that delineates its areas of control versus those held by the RSF amid the continuing conflict. The map indicated green areas that are fully under SAF control, including Northern, River Nile, Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, Blue Nile, Gezira, and Sinnar states, while RSF-controlled territories, encompassing West, South, and East Darfur, were marked in red.
