Pakistan urges worldwide measures to alleviate effects of climate change
Pakistan's Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Musadik Masood Malik, emphasized the need for global solidarity and decisive action to address the challenges posed by climate change, highlighting the urgency for comprehensive adaptation strategies.

"To combat climate change, we need to invest in resilient infrastructure, improved water management systems, enhanced disaster preparedness and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture," the minister stated during a recent event.

Referring to the catastrophic floods that struck Pakistan in 2022, Malik pointed out that the nation carries an undue share of the burdens associated with climate change. He noted that Pakistan consistently ranks among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, all while contributing less than 1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

"Rising average temperatures, increasingly erratic rainfall patterns and the alarming retreat of glaciers are clear indicators of an unfolding crisis that threatens the country's water security, agriculture and overall economic stability," he explained.

On the topic of Pakistan's commitment to climate mitigation, Malik mentioned that the government is implementing measures aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy to 60 percent by 2030, promoting the transition to electric vehicles, and supporting nature-based solutions for carbon sequestration.

He further asserted that Pakistan cannot reach its climate goals in isolation and urged developed nations to meet their climate finance obligations, particularly by activating the loss and damage fund.

Malik concluded by emphasizing the necessity of mobilizing financial and technological support to ensure a just transition and to enhance resilience among the most vulnerable populations.
