The inaugural Shanghai Forum for a Maritime Community with a Shared Future took place at Shanghai Maritime University, attracting around 200 participants from universities, the shipping industry, and research institutions.
During the event, an initiative was launched in which attendees advocated for collaborative efforts to safeguard the planet's oceans and establish a shared marine future. They called for heightened awareness of maritime security, responsible development of marine resources, protection of the marine ecological environment, safe and organized maritime navigation, the safeguarding of national maritime rights and interests, and the maintenance of peace and stability at sea.
The forum's theme, "Win-Win Blue Future: China's Solution and the Global Vision," marks the sixth anniversary of China introducing the concept of building a maritime community with a shared future, which was first proposed in April 2019.
Participants expressed their belief that this maritime community is an essential aspect of the broader vision for a shared future for humanity that China has put forth. The concept upholds the rich traditions of China’s maritime heritage and embodies Asia’s principles of mutual respect, consensus-building, and consideration for all parties involved, thereby contributing to the progress of global maritime civilization.
This concept not only enhances maritime exchanges and cooperation but also articulates China's aspirations for global ocean governance.
The forum featured discussions among senior diplomats and experts on a variety of subjects, including people-to-people diplomacy, international maritime cooperation, the changing global landscape, and ocean governance.
Roundtable dialogues included industry leaders, maritime economists, technology experts, and scholars of maritime law, focusing on themes such as sustainable development of marine resources, the adoption of clean ocean energy, multilateral consultation frameworks, protection of marine biodiversity, and the enhancement of maritime security through innovative governance strategies.
