Pro-independence leader rejects Trump's proposal to purchase Greenland
Denmark’s prime minister has asserted that its self-governing Arctic island should remain free from foreign control.

Greenland's pro-independence leader has dismissed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion to purchase the mineral-rich territory from Denmark. As Trump prepares to take office on January 20, he has revived his earlier notion of acquiring Greenland. Recently, he expressed on his Truth Social platform, “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” promising to “protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world.”

Mute Bourup Egede, Greenland’s prime minister and a proponent of the island’s independence, emphasized that Greenland should not fall under foreign dominion. “Let me repeat – Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. Our future and fight for independence is our business,” Egede stated on Facebook on Tuesday.

He continued, “While others, including Danes and Americans, are entitled to their opinions, we should not be caught up in the hysteria and external pressures distract us from our path. The future is ours and ours to shape.” Egede reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to steering Greenland toward independence from Denmark.

This former Danish colony, home to approximately 57,000 residents, has enjoyed self-governing status since 1979 and was granted the right to seek independence through a referendum in 2009.

Trump first proposed purchasing Greenland in 2019, a suggestion that was met with swift rejection from both the local government and officials in Copenhagen. On Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. made a surprise visit to the island, sharing on X, “Greenland loves America and Trump!!! Incredible people with an equally awesome reception.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has voiced support for U.S. investment in Greenland, yet has refrained from endorsing Trump’s renewed interest in the island. “The starting point of the government is very clear: the future of Greenland should be decided in Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” she told TV 2.

She also noted, “The United States is Denmark’s most important ally. Today’s discussion does not change that.”

In addition to his Greenland proposal, Trump has suggested other ambitious foreign policies, such as turning Canada into America’s “51st state” and regaining control over the Panama Canal, both of which have been rejected by the respective leaders of Canada and Panama.
