EU's Future 'in danger,' Says Borrell
The future of the EU faces significant challenges amid various crises on its periphery and increasing uncertainty regarding defense assurances from the US, according to Brussels' outgoing foreign policy chief.

Josep Borrell provided a concerning overview of current world events as he introduced a new collection of his speeches and essays, titled ‘Europe in the Arc of Fire.’ He highlighted volatile situations in Ukraine, Gaza, and Africa as primary threats to global stability.

“The events we have had to face during the last several months have – unfortunately – confirmed the diagnosis made earlier: Europe is in danger,” Borrell conveyed on his office's website.

He elaborated, stating, “Our geopolitical environment is deteriorating, and conflicts and crises are multiplying on our doorstep. From Ukraine to the Middle East, via South Caucasus, the Horn of Africa or the Sahel.” He also emphasized that this is happening against a backdrop of growing uncertainty regarding the future of US commitment to European security.

The diplomat pointed out that Washington’s dedication to “Europe’s security as a whole has become more uncertain for the future,” particularly in light of Donald Trump’s potential re-election.

“Our well-being and future cannot continue to depend on the mood of US voters in the Midwest every four years,” Borrell urged, calling for increased defense efforts among EU member states.

He cautioned that there exists “a serious risk” of the Ukraine conflict consolidating a coalition of forces opposing the West. Highlighting the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, he warned that such a coalition could also “materialize” in the Sahel region, especially with UN peacekeepers expected to withdraw from Mali by the end of 2023.

BRICS, established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has maintained a position against sanctions on Moscow over the ongoing conflict with Ukraine and advocates for a diplomatic solution to the upheaval.

In recent years, Russia and China have intensified their economic cooperation, framing their relationship as a “strategic partnership.” Both nuclear powers have expressed opposition to the “unilateralism” of the US-led NATO alliance and have indicated their desire to help shape a more equitable international relations framework.
