Vavilova, who is said to have accompanied Durov to France, has been detained by local authorities, as reported by several media outlets. Describing herself as a crypto coach and streamer based in Dubai, she has been seen with Durov on various occasions and was on the private jet with him when they arrived in Paris.
Durov, a Russian tech mogul with citizenship in France, the UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, was taken into custody after their private jet landed at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday. He is reportedly facing accusations of not adequately addressing criminal activities on his platform.
Although Durov and Vavilova have not publicly disclosed their relationship, their frequent appearances together suggest a close connection. Vavilova’s social media updates indicate that she has recently been in the same countries as Durov, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan.
With over 22,000 followers on Instagram, Vavilova has shared posts from what is believed to be Durov’s private jet, as well as several photos of herself in Paris alongside Durov.
The timing of their arrival in the French capital, coupled with Durov's subsequent arrest, has sparked speculation about Vavilova’s potential involvement in his detention. Some reports suggest that her numerous social media posts revealing Durov's whereabouts may have drawn the attention of authorities, whether intentionally or not.
Vavilova's Instagram biography states that she speaks four languages—English, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic—and has interests in "gaming, crypto, languages, and mindset."
Durov co-founded Telegram in 2013 in Russia, and the messaging platform now boasts approximately 1 billion active monthly users. After leaving Russia in the mid-2010s, Durov settled in Dubai and was granted French citizenship in 2021.
In response to Durov’s arrest, Telegram stated on Sunday that the company adheres to EU laws and content moderation policies, describing claims of Durov’s responsibility for platform misuse by bad actors as "absurd."
Many Russian politicians have expressed condemnation of Durov’s arrest, suggesting it may be politically motivated. Notably, several public figures in the West, including journalist Tucker Carlson and entrepreneur Elon Musk, have also defended Durov.
