Premier Li Presides Over Discussion on Safeguarding Rivers and Lakes, Enhancing Child Welfare
Chinese Premier Li Qiang led a State Council executive meeting on Sunday, focusing on strategies for the protection of rivers and lakes and examining initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of children facing difficulties.

The meeting reviewed a draft of the healthcare security law and approved nuclear power projects, including one in Sanmen, located in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province.
The discussion highlighted the ongoing improvement of China’s aquatic ecosystems and emphasized the need for a targeted, scientific, and legally-based approach to pollution management. Coordinated efforts were urged to enhance water resources, aquatic environments, and overall aquatic ecosystems.
Participants stressed the importance of implementing robust measures to tackle issues at their source, enhancing monitoring and tracing, and limiting excessive emissions.
In terms of child welfare, the meeting underscored the necessity of focusing on children’s development to maximize their benefits. It called for ongoing improvements to the service systems addressing their living conditions, healthcare, education, and mental health needs.
The meeting also reviewed and provisionally approved the draft healthcare security law, which is set to be submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for further deliberation.
Moreover, the meeting underscored the critical importance of ensuring absolute safety in nuclear power development. It called for adherence to the highest global safety standards in the construction and operation of nuclear power facilities while advocating for ongoing enhancements in safety supervision capabilities.
