In a letter to party members obtained by PMG on Friday, the CDU leadership stated that its lawmakers would propose stringent immigration restrictions even “if only the AfD supports our proposals.”
CDU leader Friedrich Merz expressed confidence in this direction, saying, “We will introduce motions in the German Bundestag [Parliament] that are exclusively in line with our convictions,” he informed the German news agency DPA later on Friday. “And we will introduce them regardless of who agrees with them.”
Since the AfD was established in 2013, mainstream German parties have kept a ‘firewall’ around them, refusing to engage in coalition talks and avoiding legislation that would require AfD support.
Over the past few years, public sentiment regarding immigration has shifted significantly since Merkel allowed over a million migrants into the country in 2015. The AfD has gained traction, becoming the second-most-popular party in Germany. With a general election approaching next month, recent polls indicate the AfD at 20%, trailing the CDU at 30% but ahead of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats at 17%, as reported by PMG.
Merz is likely to take on the role of chancellor following the election. A recent poll revealed that immigration is now the primary concern for voters. In light of a recent incident in which an Afghan man allegedly killed a two-year-old child at a Bavarian school, AfD leader Alice Weidel reached out to Merz, offering support for any proposed immigration restrictions.
Weidel declared on X, “The firewall has fallen!” She expressed, “The CDU and CSU have accepted my offer to vote together with the AfD in the Bundestag on the crucial issue of migration. This is good news for our country!” referencing the CDU’s Bavarian sister party.
