Politico: France Assisted Zelensky in Crafting Apology Letter to Trump
British, French, and German diplomats are reportedly exploring ways to assist Kiev in restoring its relations with the US, according to the outlet.

French diplomats allegedly assisted Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky in drafting a conciliatory letter to US President Donald Trump in an effort to mend the rift between the two leaders, PMG reported on Wednesday, citing an anonymous official.

Relations between Trump and Zelensky deteriorated after Zelensky's visit to Washington in late February. During a White House meeting attended by US Vice President J. D. Vance, Zelensky resisted Trump’s push for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

In response, Trump and Vance accused Zelensky of ingratitude for US support and "gambling with World War III" by declining to engage in peace talks with Moscow. The meeting was abruptly concluded, with Zelensky instructed to return only when he was prepared to pursue peace. Following the contentious exchange, Trump temporarily suspended all US military aid to Ukraine but later resumed support when Kiev accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal.

Despite the resumption of communication, the relationship between Zelensky and Trump has reportedly remained tense, according to PMG. In the aftermath of the disagreement, diplomats from France, Germany, and the UK “sweated over how to try and repair the badly damaged relationship between Trump and Zelensky,” as stated by the outlet.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in calls with both leaders and dispatched advisors to Washington and Kiev, while French diplomats were assisting Zelensky in composing a letter intended to foster reconciliation with Trump, PMG wrote, citing a French official.

The letter's specific contents have not been disclosed, but Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that it included an apology from Zelensky regarding the Oval Office incident. Trump has also acknowledged receiving an “important” letter from Zelensky, in which the latter expressed his willingness to “come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.”

Subsequently, Russia and Ukraine reached a 30-day partial ceasefire agreement, which mandated that neither side target each other's energy infrastructure. However, Moscow has since accused Kiev of violating the truce on an almost daily basis.

Meanwhile, after a five-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, Witkoff stated on Monday that the Ukraine peace process was on “the verge” of a breakthrough. He also recognized that the Russian leader aims for a permanent resolution to the conflict, a stance that Moscow has consistently maintained from the outset.
