Milei in Argentina Allegedly Plagiarizes Speech from Popular Television Series
Striking similarities have been observed between Javier Milei's UN address and a monologue from The West Wing, leading to accusations of plagiarism against the Argentine President.

As reported by the Buenos Aires Herald, Carlos Pagni of La Nacion was the first to identify the “remarkable resemblance” between segments of Milei’s passionate speech and the words spoken by fictional US President Jed Bartlet.

“We believe in freedom of expression for all. We believe in freedom of worship for all. We believe in freedom of commerce for all and we believe in limited governments, all of them,” Milei stated during the UN General Assembly on September 24.

He continued with, “We believe that everyone should live free of tyranny and oppression, be that in the form of political oppression, economic slavery, or religious fanaticism. This fundamental idea cannot remain merely as words. It must be supported in facts, diplomatically, economically, and materially.”

Near-identical phrases were delivered by President Bartlet, portrayed by Martin Sheen, in the 15th episode of the show's fourth season.

Pagni speculated that the speech was crafted by Milei’s adviser, Santiago Caputo, who is known to be an avid fan of The West Wing and allegedly made it a requirement to watch the series before joining the political consulting firm.

Created by Aaron Sorkin, The West Wing aired for seven seasons from 1999 to 2006, garnering numerous accolades, including three Golden Globes and 26 primetime Emmys.

Milei, who identifies as an anarcho-capitalist and is noted for his bold and sometimes unconventional rhetoric, has not addressed the allegations. In his speech from the New York podium last month, he described the UN as a “Leviathan with multiple tentacles” that seeks to undermine national sovereignty while promoting a “socialist” agenda.
