Wang Yi Calls on BRICS to Be a Central Player in Defending Justice
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of BRICS nations maintaining their principles and positioning themselves as the primary force in upholding global fairness and justice against hegemonism during a statement made on Tuesday.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these remarks at a gathering of foreign ministers and high-ranking officials from BRICS member nations and partner countries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The meeting, chaired by Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, provided a platform for discussions on enhancing cooperation among Global South nations and reasserting the commitment to multilateralism.
Wang highlighted that Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the BRICS New Development Bank's headquarters on the same day, conveying a strong message of China's unwavering support for the institution. China is optimistic about the collaborative journey ahead for the bank and the BRICS community toward modernization.
Wang stated, “In the face of hegemonism, BRICS nations must stand firm on principle and serve as the main force in safeguarding fairness and justice.”
First, he called for preserving the central role of the United Nations, asserting that the "greater BRICS" should promote principles such as extensive consultation, collective contribution, and shared benefits, support the multilateral trading system, and work toward a more equitable global governance framework.
Secondly, he advocated for the peaceful resolution of disputes. Wang noted that BRICS nations should champion a vision of security that is common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable, and remain committed to addressing conflicts through peaceful dialogue. He expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with the international community, particularly BRICS nations, to reach a political resolution regarding the Ukraine crisis.
Wang also mentioned BRICS nations' support for the Gaza recovery and reconstruction efforts endorsed by Arab and Islamic states, reinforcing the principle that "The Palestinians governing Palestine" should be upheld.
Thirdly, he stressed the need for an open and cooperative international atmosphere. Wang proposed that BRICS members should maintain an inclusive approach, welcoming partner countries to engage actively within the bloc and fully participate in shared initiatives.
The foreign ministers present highlighted the necessity of upholding multilateralism amid escalating geopolitical tensions and increasing protectionist measures. They reiterated the importance of adhering to the objectives and principles of the UN Charter and ensuring the United Nations' central role in the international system.
Concerns were also raised regarding the impact of "reciprocal tariffs" on global supply chains, which could exacerbate uncertainty in the international landscape.
