Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, announced her death, stating that she “was with family and friends at the end,” and noted that she died peacefully in a hospital on Friday morning.
The brothers conveyed their sorrow, saying, “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.” They also expressed gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care during her final days.
In their message, they added, “We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Born in 1934, Smith enjoyed a prolific career in both film and theater, earning recognition for her sharp wit in comedic roles. She is celebrated as one of Britain’s most iconic and talented actresses.
Over her nearly seven-decade career, Smith garnered numerous honors, including two Oscars: best actress for ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ in 1969 and best supporting actress for ‘California Suite’ in 1978, as well as five BAFTA awards, four Emmys, and three Golden Globes.
In the 2000s, Smith took on the significant roles of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series and the Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in the beloved TV series Downton Abbey, a role she reprised in two standalone films released in 2019 and 2022.
