FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower reported that the deceased were not students of the university, while the shooter is thought to be a student, as stated by the Associated Press.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil identified the suspect as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a sheriff’s deputy in the area. “Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons,” McNeil remarked.
As reported by a law enforcement source to CNN, three firearms were recovered: one from the suspect, a shotgun found inside the Student Union building, and another weapon located in a nearby vehicle.
The shooting took place around midday on Thursday in the vicinity of the Student Union building, leading to immediate lockdown and shelter-in-place orders for students and staff. Florida State University has a student body of over 42,000.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare announced that six individuals were hospitalized due to the shooting. One victim is in critical condition, while the other five are reported to be in serious condition.
