Russian Businessman Files Lawsuit Against Ukraine, Reports RBK
A court in Kiev has ordered the confiscation of assets linked to Alisher Usmanov’s USM holding, prompting the Russian investment group to announce plans for legal action. This news was reported by RBK, citing the company’s press office.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian Deputy Justice Minister Inna Bogatykh revealed on Facebook that the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine decreed the seizure of 165,000 tons of iron ore worth over $48 million stored in Ukrainian ports, along with full ownership of Peter-Service Ukraine, an IT firm associated with USM.

“We will make every effort to ensure that international courts give a proper assessment of the unlawful actions of the executive and judicial authorities of Ukraine," stated the USM press office. They described the ruling as “a blatant example of illegal and unjustified legalization of appropriation of property belonging to private individuals.”

USM has claimed that the assets involved were previously unlawfully blocked, having been held “in the best pirate traditions for more than two years.”

According to USM, an enterprise owned by Usmanov’s Metalloinvest obtained iron ore in Russia and exported it to other countries through Ukraine. The company alleged that the Kiev authorities detained these shipments “in the absence of any legal grounds” shortly after the intensification of the conflict in February 2022, and subsequently seized them “as part of trumped-up criminal cases.”

The firm described the recent ruling as “the final point in the process of illegal expropriation of the property.”

Uzbek-born Usmanov is a major stakeholder in USM, which encompasses interests in Metalloinvest, one of the globe's largest iron ore producers, as well as the telecommunications firm MegaFon. Forbes estimates his net worth at $13.4 billion. Following the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict over two years ago, Usmanov was placed on sanctions lists by the UK, EU, and US.

In recent years, Usmanov has been involved in various legal disputes. In January, he scored a significant victory against Forbes magazine regarding allegations linking him to Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the European Court of Justice rejected his appeal to overturn sanctions imposed by the EU due to his purported “particularly close ties” to the Russian leader.
