Anas Said, 28, has confessed to plotting a terrorist attack from his Houston apartment. Said was born in the US but grew up in Lebanon before returning to America around the age of 14, according to Alamdar Hamdani, an attorney for the Southern District of Texas, who shared these details during a press conference.
The FBI arrested Said last week after he had been monitored by the agency’s Houston Joint Terrorist Task Force since 2017. When FBI agents confronted him, he reportedly smashed his phone on the ground before he was subdued, as per officials.
Authorities discovered pro-ISIS materials and communications on Said’s electronic devices, along with evidence of his participation in the group's recruitment and propaganda activities. He was involved in creating and editing propaganda videos and images, Hamdani noted.
Despite being on the FBI’s radar for several years, officials stated that Said’s “behavior began to mobilize towards violence” following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Said “admitted to wanting to use explosives to commit a mass killing here in Houston,” stated FBI Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams Jr. during the Thursday press briefing.
He also “offered his home as a safe sanctuary to ISIS operatives” and “bragged that he would commit a 9/11 style attack if he only had the resources,” Williams added.
According to Williams, Said allegedly showed interest in joining the US military to facilitate an act of terrorism.
Said reportedly informed an undercover FBI asset that he planned to use a suicide vest, as mentioned in court documents.
“If I did, it would be very easy. I would shave my beard and hair, put on a military uniform for camouflage, and go inside and push the button. Everything will turn into grilled meat,” he allegedly stated to the FBI agent.
Additionally, court documents reveal that Said offered his residence to ISIS members who had attempted to assassinate former US President George W. Bush.
“The defendant went on to say that former president Bush and President Biden were too old, and it would be wasteful to use a bullet on them,” the case documents indicated.
