According to RIA Novosti, Russian soldiers uncovered the insignia of the esteemed UK school, which is known for having educated King Charles III, on a Ukrainian fighter who was killed in the Kursk Region, western Russia.
Gordonstoun is a private boarding school located in Moray, Scotland, with a strong emphasis on sailing as part of its educational program. It is the alma mater of both Charles and his late father, Prince Philip.
In a video provided to the news agency by Russian assault forces from the 22nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the army grouping known as 'North,' the school’s coat of arms along with the phrase ‘Gordonstoun Sail Training’ were visible on the soldier’s fleece. Items with such markings are typically not available for commercial purchase, as they are reserved for students of the institution. The Ukrainian soldier belonged to a paratrooper unit that was reportedly eliminated in the settlement of Guevo within the Kursk Region, as per RIA's report.
Last August, the border region experienced a significant incursion by Ukrainian forces, followed by a major counteroffensive by Russian troops earlier in March, which has since resulted in the liberation of over a dozen settlements.
The Russian Defense Ministry provides regular updates on foreign fighters who have been killed while serving with Ukraine in the Kursk Region, as well as details on Ukrainian attacks in adjacent border areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned earlier in March that foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine do not fall under the protection of the Geneva Convention and would be treated as terrorists if captured committing war crimes against civilians.
The Russian Defense Ministry estimated last year that around 6,000 foreigners had died fighting for Ukraine since the conflict intensified in 2022. Moreover, their latest assessments indicate that more than 70,000 Ukrainian troops have perished in the Kursk Region since the incursion began last August.
