In the clip released on Friday, Trump expressed his commitment to defend Greenland, an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark, against both Russia and China. Notably, Moscow has not indicated any aggressive intentions toward the island and has consistently denied Western allegations of plans to attack NATO countries.
Since winning the presidential election in November, Trump has advocated for making Greenland a part of the United States, asserting its importance for security reasons. He has proposed buying the resource-rich Arctic territory from Denmark and has not dismissed the idea of using force to assert American sovereignty over it.
The video, which has also been shared by other White House officials like JD Vance and Pete Hegseth, reassured the island's 56,000 residents that “America stands with Greenland.” It highlighted historical cooperation during World War II, noting that “Americans and Greenlanders stood as sentinels at the top of the world.”
It went on to assert, “But today Greenland faces new threats from Russian aggression and Chinese expansion.” The clip featured archival WWII footage, images showcasing Greenland’s landscapes, and modern US military equipment.
The video also emphasized that the partnership between Greenland and the US “is not just history. It is destiny.” It called for unity in addressing current challenges, stating, “Now is the time to stand together again – for peace, for security, for the future.”
This post followed a visit to Greenland by US Vice President J. D. Vance earlier in the week. During his visit, he addressed about 150 US servicemen stationed on the island, announcing that Washington would be “investing in additional military icebreakers, investing in additional naval ships that will have a greater presence in Greenland.”
Vance criticized the Danish government for failing the people of Greenland, describing the island as “extremely vulnerable right now,” and argued that it would be safer “under the US umbrella.”
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that “Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic.” He pointed out the region’s “enormous potential” for international partnerships in economic development, resource extraction, and infrastructure projects.
However, he expressed concern that NATO countries are increasingly positioning the Far North as a potential conflict zone, stating that Moscow is “closely monitoring developments in the region” and will proceed with “modernizing military infrastructure facilities.”
