Fidan issued his warning regarding the potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that it could even evolve into nuclear warfare. This statement came shortly after the United States announced nearly $1 billion in additional military assistance for Ukraine. Recently, reports indicated that NATO officials have revived discussions about possibly deploying Western troops to the region, a move that has drawn stern warnings from Moscow.
“We do not deny the possibility that the war will develop into a much more dangerous dimension, both geographically and potentially into the use of nuclear weapons,” Fidan remarked in the Turkish parliament on Tuesday.
He noted that Ankara's diplomatic initiatives aim to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict by 2025.
Historically, Türkiye hosted the initial peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022, shortly after the onset of hostilities. Moscow claimed an agreement was practically finalized when negotiations fell apart. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, David Arakhamia, later revealed that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had encouraged Ukraine to continue its military efforts. Johnson, however, has denied having any influence on the collapse of the peace discussions.
In a recent interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow's stance on future negotiations with Ukraine. He stated that while Russia is open to initiating talks based on previously agreed terms from the 2022 Istanbul negotiations, changes on the ground mean new "realities" must be considered. This includes the territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye, which voted to join Russia in a series of referendums and are now considered integral parts of the country, according to Lavrov.
