Over 1,000 Fatalities Confirmed in Myanmar Earthquake
The ongoing rescue operations are expected to result in an increasing number of victims following the earthquake that struck Myanmar with a magnitude of 7.7 on Friday.

As reported by the state-run broadcaster MRTV, the death toll has now reached 1,002. The updated figures reflect "all the earthquake-affected areas nationwide" and were shared on Saturday.

Myanmar Now previously indicated that at least 2,400 additional individuals have sustained injuries across the Southeast Asian nation. Authorities have stated that the death toll is likely to rise further as rescue efforts are still underway.

On the same day, Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing visited Mandalay, which suffered significant damage from the earthquake. During his discussions with local officials, he directed them to initiate search and rescue operations promptly and to implement necessary measures to aid those affected, according to MRTV.

In earlier reports, it was noted that 1,591 homes, 670 monasteries, and 60 schools were damaged in and around Mandalay, situated about 17 kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter.

In response to the disaster, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry announced on Saturday that two planes carrying around 120 rescuers have been dispatched to assist Myanmar in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The tremors were felt as far away as Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok. local authorities reported at least 10 fatalities, 16 injuries, and 101 individuals missing due to the disaster.

The Chinese embassy in Myanmar confirmed that a team of 37 rescue workers has been flown to the country. Additionally, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar announced on X that New Delhi had sent a plane loaded with emergency personnel, paramedics, and humanitarian aid to Myanmar.

On Friday, President Vladimir Putin extended his condolences to Myanmar's leadership, stating that “Russia shares the grief of the friendly people of Myanmar." He also expressed sympathy for those who have lost loved ones in the earthquake and wished for a swift recovery for all those injured, according to the Kremlin.
