Boarding Schools Essential for Children in Remote Xizang Areas
According to a white paper released on Friday, boarding schools play a crucial role in educating children from remote farming and pastoral regions in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

Access to schools in these areas is often impeded by high altitudes, harsh natural conditions, very low population densities, and long distances, as noted in the white paper titled "Human Rights in Xizang in the New Era."

To tackle these challenges, Xizang has implemented measures similar to those employed across the nation, complying with the Compulsory Education Law. This includes providing accommodation services and covering all costs associated with boarding, lodging, and basic educational expenses for students at certain schools, as highlighted in the report released by the State Council Information Office.

The document states that students and their families have the option to choose whether to board at the schools, and students can return home on weekends and during holidays.

These initiatives are aimed at ensuring that students from all ethnic backgrounds have equal rights to quality education, the white paper emphasizes.

From 2014 to 2024, Xizang invested approximately 302.3 billion yuan in education through government budgets, as indicated in the report.

Additionally, the white paper mentions that in 2012, Xizang set a precedent nationally by providing 15 years of publicly funded education, covering the entire span from kindergarten through senior high school.

By 2024, the region has achieved a gross enrollment rate of 91.33 percent for preschool education, a 97.86 percent completion rate for nine-year compulsory education, a 91.56 percent gross enrollment rate in senior high schools, and a 57.81 percent enrollment rate for higher education, according to the document.

Overall, the major educational indicators in Xizang have either reached or surpassed the national averages.
