CNN Host Faces Accusations of Hypocrisy Regarding Book on Biden's Health
In ‘Original Sin’, Jake Tapper has alleged that the former president’s cognitive decline was covered up, despite previously dismissing such claims.

CNN anchor Jake Tapper is facing significant criticism on social media for co-authoring a soon-to-be-released book claiming that the cognitive decline of former U.S. President Joe Biden was concealed, despite having previously rejected similar assertions. Penguin Press announced the project in a press release on Wednesday.

The book, set for release on May 20, is co-authored by Tapper and Axios correspondent Alex Thompson. It explores Biden’s choice to pursue re-election, labeling it as his “original sin” that sparked a campaign of “gaslighting and denial,” which ultimately facilitated the election victory of current President Donald Trump. The authors assert that they provide an insider’s perspective on private discussions revealing the seriousness of Biden’s decline and the efforts made to hide it.

Following the book's announcement, critics accused Tapper of hypocrisy, pointing out that he had defended Biden against allegations of cognitive decline in the past.

During a 2020 interview with Lara Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Tapper interrupted her when she suggested that Biden was experiencing “cognitive decline.” He stated, “I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline.”

Some individuals have argued that CNN is “complicit in the fraud,” while others have focused their criticisms on Tapper, calling his book a clear attempt at deflection.

“It’s a book written by Jake about how Jake covered up Biden’s decline so Jake could write a book. Tell me – if Biden had won would this book still be published?” one user commented on X.

Despite previously defending Biden, Tapper became one of Biden's most vocal critics following the debate between Biden and Trump in June 2024, which he co-moderated.

Throughout the campaign, questions surrounding Biden’s physical and mental capabilities persisted, with Republicans frequently asserting that the 81-year-old lacked the sharpness needed to serve another term. However, it was Biden’s lackluster performance at a CNN-hosted debate with Trump in June that drew significant attention to the president’s waning abilities. During the debate, Biden struggled with his thoughts, mixed up words and numbers, and found it challenging to complete sentences.

Biden's performance drew widespread criticism, including from Tapper himself. Ultimately, the former president withdrew from the race in July, approximately a hundred days before the election, and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to take his place.
