Chinese Premier Li Qiang expressed on Wednesday his aspirations for China and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to maintain their focus on development and broaden the scope of their bilateral collaboration.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang expressed his hopes for continued focus on development and the expansion of bilateral cooperation between China and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This meeting took place in Kunming, Yunnan Province, where ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa is attending the eighth Greater Mekong Subregion Summit from November 6 to 7.

Li highlighted China’s status as the largest developing nation globally, noting the ADB's role as a multilateral development institution dedicated to fostering common advancement in Asia and the Pacific region.

The Premier stated that China is ready to enhance financial collaboration with the ADB in key areas such as environmental protection, green and low-carbon development, and elderly and medical care. In addition, he emphasized the importance of deepening knowledge cooperation concerning emerging industries, fiscal and tax system reforms, and addressing the challenges posed by an aging population.

He also expressed China's intention to share its experiences in poverty alleviation, the digital economy, and green development with other developing nations through the ADB platform. Li reiterated China's commitment to participating in and supporting the Greater Mekong Subregion's economic cooperation and working alongside all parties to foster regional development and prosperity.

Li noted the general stability and progress of China's economy this year and assured that the nation would continue its high-level opening-up initiatives.

In response, Masatsugu Asakawa remarked on the significance of the steady growth of the Chinese economy for the recovery of both the Asia-Pacific region and the global economy. He affirmed the ADB's resolve to cultivate a stronger, more comprehensive cooperative relationship with China and to continue backing the country’s high-quality development.

Asakawa expressed the ADB’s willingness to enhance collaboration with China in domains such as green and low-carbon development, climate change initiatives, biodiversity protection, energy transition, as well as knowledge and innovation. He added that the ADB aims to promote tangible outcomes from the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program and stand alongside China in advocating for free trade while opposing protectionism.
