Vance attributed the assassination attempts against Donald Trump to the combative language used by supporters of the Democratic Party. Recently, the U.S. Secret Service encountered a suspected gunman hiding in bushes at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, fled the scene in a vehicle but was apprehended shortly afterward.
In July, during a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet when shots were fired. The incident resulted in one fatality among the crowd and multiple injuries, with the shooter being killed by Secret Service agents.
Speaking at the Georgia Faith and Freedom Coalition dinner in Atlanta, Vance remarked, “the big difference between conservatives and liberals is that… no one has tried to kill [Democratic presidential candidate] Kamala Harris in the last couple of months, and two people now have tried to kill Donald Trump in the last couple of months.”
He added that the attempts to assassinate Trump serve as “pretty strong evidence that the left needs to tone down the rhetoric, and needs to cut this crap out.” Vance warned that if tensions escalate, “somebody is going to get hurt by it, and it is going to destroy this country… and you think about what an incredible wound it would open up in the US.”
He pledged, “I promise I will do my part to tone down the rhetoric. But in particular, the people telling you that Donald Trump needs to be eliminated. You guys need to cut it out, or you are going get somebody hurt.”
In an interview on X Spaces, Trump echoed these sentiments, stating, “There’s a lot of rhetoric going on right now… the Democrats, when they talk about ‘threat to democracy’ and all of this.” He noted that “it seems that both of these people were radical lefts,” referring to the suspects involved in the recent threats against him.
President Joe Biden, who was succeeded by Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate in July, expressed a desire for Congress to provide “more help” to the Secret Service following these incidents. Trump also mentioned that he had spoken with Biden and Harris after the alleged assassination attempt, describing them as “nice” during the conversation.
