Surge in Demand for Bulletproof Homes in US, Bloomberg Reports
The ultra-rich are increasingly investing in private security, particularly following the assassination of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson.

According to Bloomberg, U.S. billionaires have been enhancing their personal and residential safety measures in recent years by installing bulletproof fittings and panic rooms. Demand for private security firms had already grown prior to Thompson's murder earlier this month, but his killing has ignited a new surge in security spending.

Fortified Estate, a company specializing in armored doors, bulletproof glass windows, and advanced home fortifications, reported that October, just ahead of the U.S. presidential election, marked one of its busiest months ever. "People just weren’t sure what was going to happen," explained Jon Harris, the company's founder. Since establishing the firm in 2018, he has witnessed a significant increase in demand for home security among America’s elite, particularly during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as in response to events like the killing of George Floyd and the 2021 Capitol riot.

According to Russell Grey, director of Security Services International, wealthy individuals have been investing millions in private security, with the installation of bulletproof glass becoming increasingly common over the past four years, especially in the last 18 months. "The political landscape has made people feel quite uneasy," he remarked. "They have this perception that there’s an assassin on every street corner, but there’s not."

The sense of threat escalated after the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, who was shot outside a Hilton hotel in Manhattan a week ago. Responses on social media included some expressing approval of Thompson’s murder, while 'wanted' posters were circulated throughout New York, calling for the targeting of other executives.

Matthias Fitzthum, founder of Bespoke Home & Yacht Security, noted a sharp increase in demand from CEOs for fortified rooms in offices and protective equipment for their homes just within the past week. Many affluent families are “doubling or even tripling their security budgets,” he stated. Popular items now include thermal security cameras, armored doors and windows, panic rooms, and various advanced installations such as sensors for valuable artwork, anti-drone systems, and gas detection technology. According to Fitzthum, the cost for high-tech security solutions starts at approximately $1.5 million.
