According to the statement, the ministers advocate for a multilateral trading system that is open, transparent, fair, predictable, inclusive, equal, and non-discriminatory, prioritizing rules with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its center. They expressed serious concern over unjust unilateral protectionist measures that breach WTO regulations, particularly the misuse of reciprocal tariffs.
The statement emphasized the importance of international trade as a crucial engine for inclusive growth, the eradication of hunger and poverty, and sustainable development in the Global South.
The ministers also affirmed their dedication to advocating for necessary reforms within the WTO, aiming to enhance its functionality and reinforce its foundational principles in response to the increasing trends of unilateralism and protectionism.
They affirmed their commitment to multilateralism and adherence to international law, upholding the principles and purposes of the UN Charter while ensuring the UN's central role in the international framework. The ministers condemned any unilateral actions that seek to disrupt the functioning of multilateral institutions.
Furthermore, they stressed that countries should work together on the basis of equality and mutual respect to promote and safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms.
