Senate Democrats launch campaign against GOP opponents
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is targeting Republicans in key races in four battleground states: Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
These ads will target four Republican candidates: Kari Lake in Arizona, Eric Hovde in Wisconsin, Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, and Mike Rogers in Michigan. This effort is part of a $79 million advertising blitz by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).
Each ad addresses specific criticisms of the Republican candidates.
In Michigan, the ad criticizes Rogers for accepting money from Big Pharma and Wall Street and then purchasing a Florida mansion. Rogers, a former Congress member, will compete against Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, following their primary victories on Tuesday.
In Arizona, the DSCC ad features footage of Lake telling McCain Republicans to “get the hell out.” It also claims she plans to ban abortion with no exceptions and has endorsements from “white supremacists and Holocaust deniers.” Lake is vying with Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego for the open seat.
In Wisconsin, the ad portrays Hovde as “a phony” multimillionaire California banker attempting to buy a Senate seat. Hovde, the frontrunner in the GOP primary next week, is challenging Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
The DSCC is releasing two ads in Pennsylvania. One criticizes McCormick for being “very, very happy” at the prospect of Roe v. Wade being overturned. The other warns that under McCormick’s leadership, Bridgewater Associates turned into the top foreign hedge fund in China, aiding the country's military. McCormick is aiming to unseat Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.
Democrats are contending with a challenging Senate map. Republicans might only need to flip one seat to regain Senate control, especially with a likely gain in West Virginia. Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) will need to defend their seats in states won by former President Donald Trump in 2020. Meanwhile, Democrats must reelect all their incumbents and win open seats in Arizona and Michigan.
August will see a surge of campaign ads from party committees and super PACs. Many candidates have already been airing ads for weeks.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s independent expenditure is also launching its first ad of the cycle on Tuesday. The ad criticizes Slotkin for voting to provide stimulus checks to prisoners, including former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
