US Democrats Call for Investigation into Musk's Alleged Connections with Russia
The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, is facing calls for investigation over media reports that he has been in communication with senior Russian officials in recent years, according to two prominent Democratic senators.

In a letter addressed to US Attorney General Merrick Garland and Pentagon Inspector General Robert Storch, Jack Reed, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Jeanne Shaheen, a key member of the Foreign Relations Committee, expressed their concerns regarding these allegations.

The Wall Street Journal reported in October, amid the US presidential election, that Musk had contacted several high-ranking Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, as recently as this year.

As the CEO of SpaceX, Musk oversees extensive contracts with the US government. The senators pointed out that, given Musk's claims of holding top secret-level security clearance and managing highly sensitive government contracts, any potential communication with Russia poses a considerable risk.

“These relationships between a well-known US adversary and Mr. Musk, a beneficiary of billions of dollars in US government funding, pose serious questions regarding Mr. Musk’s reliability as a government contractor and a clearance holder,” they wrote.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has criticized the pre-election claims made by the WSJ regarding Musk’s purported phone calls with Putin, labeling them as “disinformation.” He asserted that historically, only one conversation had taken place between the two, prior to 2022, during which they discussed Russia’s scientific advancements and potential future developments. “There were no contacts between Musk and Putin after that, and all claims otherwise are false,” he stated.

Peskov suggested that such allegations are likely a product of the “extremely confrontational electoral political fight” occurring in the US.

Following his election victory, Donald Trump announced that Musk would head the forthcoming Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative aimed at reducing “waste and fraud” in federal spending. “The initiative will aim to cut trillions of dollars in waste, dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” Trump stated on Thursday.

Musk remarked that his involvement in the initiative, referred to as DOGE, would represent a "revolution."
