Recently Discovered Goblet-shaped Plant Species in South China
A newly identified plant species named "Thismia jinzun" has been found in the Jianfengling section of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in Hainan Province, southern China. This discovery was made by Chinese researchers and the plant is noted for its resemblance to a golden goblet described in a work by the famous poet Li Bai.

The plant is part of the Thismia genus, which has very specific environmental needs and primarily thrives in tropical regions, with fewer species found in subtropical and warm temperate areas. According to Xu Han, a researcher from the Research Institute of Tropical Forestry at the Chinese Academy of Forestry, the Thismia genus is known for its rarity.

Hainan’s distinctive ecological conditions create a suitable environment for this new species, marking the province as a hotspot for biodiversity among Thismia plants in China. Globally, there are 107 recognized species in the Thismia genus, with nine documented in China to date.

Yang Haijun, a researcher from South China Agricultural University and one of the authors of a research paper published in the international journal Phytotaxa, stated that the discovery highlights the success of conservation efforts aimed at preserving Hainan's tropical montane rainforests, which have contributed to an increase in local plant diversity and enhanced genetic resources among wild plants.
