An instruction from Elon Musk, who serves as the government efficiency czar under US President Donald Trump, for federal employees to summarize their weekly activities or face termination has sparked resistance among senior officials.
On Saturday, Musk announced on X that all government employees must provide a summary of their work from the week, cautioning that non-compliance may be treated as resignation. Emails sent to 2.3 million federal workers reportedly requested the submission of five bullet points outlining their activities by the end of Monday.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk’s team at the Department of Government Efficiency formulated this request after Trump urged him to “get more aggressive” in targeting perceived waste. The emails were disseminated through the Office of Personnel Management, the federal government’s human resources division.
However, some department officials countered by instructing employees to ignore the emails, with directives originating from Trump appointees, as reported by the New York Times on Sunday. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard instructed her staff not to reply, citing the “inherently sensitive and classified nature of our work.” FBI Director Kash Patel communicated to employees that the agency “is in charge of all our review processes,” directing them to “pause any responses.”
The Pentagon took a similar approach, according to the newspaper, highlighting an email from Darin S. Selnick, the acting head of personnel. Employees at the Department of Health and Human Services also received mixed messages regarding Musk’s request.
Musk was appointed as a special official in the Trump administration with the goal of reducing waste and fraud in government spending. Critics contend that his agenda seeks to dismantle key components of the federal government, facilitating a corporate takeover of corresponding functions.
Trump has shown support for Musk’s initiatives amidst the backlash regarding the weekly report requirement.
In response to the controversy, Musk characterized the email as a “very basic pulse check” and shared a meme comparing his job security warnings to vaccination mandates during the Covid-19 pandemic.
