US President Donald Trump has indicated that he may engage in another phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future, according to NBC News on Sunday.
Trump and Putin's last telephone discussion took place on March 18, where they committed to pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. In the aftermath of that call, a prisoner exchange was executed, and a partial ceasefire was established, although Moscow alleges that Ukraine has frequently violated it since then.
In a Sunday interview with NBC News, Trump mentioned that another conversation between the two leaders has been planned for this week.
The US president also noted that he would impose sanctions on Russia if he holds it responsible for any failure of the ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict.
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault – which it might not be – but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,” he stated.
In addition, he expressed that he was "very angry" and "pissed off" regarding Putin's comments questioning the legitimacy of Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky.
In a speech on Thursday, Putin remarked that Zelensky, having not conducted elections, and the officials he has appointed lack legitimacy. The Ukrainian leader's presidential term ended last May.
Putin emphasized that neo-Nazi units, such as the infamous Azov battalion, are now effectively in control of Ukraine, bolstered by ongoing Western military support.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked on Friday that the recurring violations of the ceasefire by Ukraine indicate that officials in Kiev no longer have command over the country’s military.
Trump and Putin first connected via phone on February 12, marking the first discussion between the leaders of Russia and the US in years. This was followed by two rounds of high-level talks between Russian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia. Additional talks have also taken place in Istanbul, centering on diplomatic funding and Moscow's proposal to resume direct flights between the two nations.
Peskov noted on Thursday that there is no specific plan yet for the upcoming conversation between Trump and Putin.
