Kylian Mbappe netted two goals as Real Madrid made a comeback to defeat Leganes 3-2 on Saturday, drawing level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Carlo Ancelotti's team secured an exciting victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, applying pressure on their fierce rivals, who are set to play against Girona in a Catalan derby on Sunday.

After being awarded a penalty, Mbappe gave Los Blancos an early lead. However, goals from Diego Garcia and Dani Raba put the relegation-threatened Leganes in front before halftime.

Jude Bellingham brought Madrid back on level terms shortly after the second half commenced, and Mbappe sealed the win with a well-taken free-kick.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are six points ahead of third-placed Atletico Madrid, who managed only a draw against Espanyol earlier in the day.

" is making the difference and that's what we want from him," stated Madrid coach Ancelotti.

Mbappe’s two goals brought his total to 33 for the season across all competitions in 44 matches, matching the record achieved by Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo during his first season in 2009-10.

"It's very special. . . . to have the same number of goals as Cristiano is always good," Mbappe shared with Real Madrid TV. "We know what he means for Real Madrid and me, we speak, he gives me a lot of advice, he scored many goals -- but we have to win trophies here."

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid's chances of winning the Spanish title diminished with a disappointing draw at Espanyol. Javi Puado secured a point for the home side with a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta had spectacularly put the visitors in front.
