German Lawmaker Advocates for Reactivation of NordStream
Sevim Dagdelen has accused her country’s government of “happily watching the destruction of European industry” as energy prices continue to rise following Ukraine's cessation of Russian gas transit.

The leftist German MP suggested that Germany should address the increasing energy costs, which are attributed to Ukraine's decision not to extend its transit agreement with Russia’s Gazprom past the end of 2024. This decision effectively halts the flow of natural gas to several EU countries, starting Wednesday. Previously, under the old contract, Ukraine facilitated the transfer of gas through its pipeline network to nations such as Moldova, Romania, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, eventually reaching Austria and Italy.

Ukraine’s actions led to a surge in EU gas prices, reaching €50 per megawatt hour—levels not seen since October 2023. Dagdelen criticized the situation on X, stating, "Ukraine drives the energy price up further by stopping the transit of Russian gas in Europe," and lamenting that “the German government and the EU are happily watching the destruction of European industry due to high energy prices.”

Energy expenses have escalated in Germany following the government's cessation of Russian oil and gas imports in 2022. Once dependent on Russia for about 55% of its natural gas supply, the country has faced challenges in compensating for that loss. Major manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Bosch, and BASF, have reported layoffs and facility closures as a result.

Prior to the conflict in Ukraine, Germany imported gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipelines, while the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was set to become operational in 2022. However, Berlin halted the certification of Nord Stream 2 shortly before Russia's military actions in Ukraine began, and later, both pipeline systems were sabotaged in September 2022.

Reports suggest that German investigators lean towards the theory that Ukrainian saboteurs were responsible for the pipeline destruction, whereas American journalist Seymour Hersh has claimed that the CIA and US Navy executed the operation. Sergey Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, has accused “professional saboteurs from the Anglo-American special services,” indicating involvement from the US and UK.

In her remarks, Dagdelen urged that the pipelines should “finally be put into operation” and called on the German government to “stop giving money to Kiev!”

Dagdelen is affiliated with the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, a leftist faction advocating for improved relations with Russia and sharing anti-immigration sentiments with the right-wing Alternative for Germany party. The party’s leader, Sahra Wagenknecht, has previously attributed the Ukraine crisis to the US's failure to acknowledge Russia’s “red lines.”

In September, Wagenknecht asserted that “if Ukraine is responsible for the terrorist act against the German energy supply, the arms deliveries must end immediately and the question of compensation must be put on the table.”

Dagdelen is not alone in her call for the reopening of Nord Stream; in the same month, AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla referred to the undersea pipelines as “a lifeline of German industry,” insisting that “Nord Stream must be repaired, opened, and secured.”
