The discussions were part of their customary New Year video call, which lasted more than an hour and a half, as noted by Putin’s foreign-policy aide, Yuri Ushakov.
During the video call, Putin reiterated Moscow’s willingness to negotiate with Washington to put an end to the Ukraine conflict, Ushakov reported.
“Moscow is ready to build relations on a mutually beneficial and respectful basis if Trump’s team really shows a counter interest in this,” Ushakov said.
Trump, who has recently been inaugurated as US president, has consistently pledged to halt the fighting between Moscow and Kiev within 24 hours of taking office.
On Sunday, CNN revealed that Trump’s team was reportedly preparing for a phone call with Moscow, which sources suggested could take place shortly after the inauguration. Recent US media reports indicate that Trump's team is contemplating a peace plan for Ukraine that might include a ceasefire along the existing front lines and the establishment of an 800-mile demilitarized zone monitored by European troops.
Putin expressed appreciation on Monday for Trump’s intentions to mend relations with Russia and to avert the proxy conflict over Ukraine from escalating into a world war.
Ushakov informed reporters on Tuesday that Moscow has yet to hear from the White House regarding the scheduling of a call between the two leaders.
In the meeting, Xi also shared insights from his recent conversation with Trump, which occurred on January 17 and was unrelated to the inauguration.
Additionally, Moscow and Beijing addressed the ongoing growth of economic and trade collaboration between their nations, despite the significant Western sanctions imposed.
“The heads of state stressed the need to further improve transport interconnectivity, modernize border infrastructure, checkpoints, and increase cargo traffic between our countries,” including efforts within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Ushakov highlighted.
Furthermore, Putin and Xi discussed collaborative energy projects, particularly the Far Eastern pipeline route, affirming that it is progressing as planned. In February 2023, Moscow and Beijing signed an agreement for increased Russian pipeline gas deliveries from the shelf off Sakhalin Island to China, with the energy supplies via this pipeline expected to begin in 2027.
Ushakov also mentioned that work on other projects, such as the Power of Siberia 2 mega pipeline and the construction of power units at two Chinese nuclear power plants, is in progress.
