Most Britons call for investigation into ‘grooming gangs,’ according to survey
The Labour Party has rejected a proposal for an investigation into the rape gangs.

A recent YouGov poll, commissioned by the Women’s Policy Center and released on Thursday by GB News, indicates that three out of four Britons are urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to initiate a national inquiry into the sexual abuse of thousands of underage girls by 'grooming gangs.' Despite this public sentiment, Starmer's Labour Party has turned down calls for such an investigation.

The survey revealed that 76% of the public supports an inquiry into the abuse, while only 13% are opposed. Support for an inquiry spans political lines, with 84% of Conservative voters, 65% of Labour voters, and 91% of Reform voters in favor.

Just hours before the poll was made public, Parliament voted down a Conservative amendment to a child protection bill that proposed establishing a national inquiry into the gangs, with a tally of 364 votes against and 111 in favor. All 411 Labour MPs either voted against the amendment or abstained, whereas 101 of the 111 Conservative MPs and all five Reform MPs supported it.

The vote followed weeks of attention drawn to the activities of the gangs by Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and owner of X, who criticized Starmer’s response to the issue during his tenure as head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013.

According to numerous government and media reports, the gangs systematically raped and abused tens of thousands of underage girls across northern England over the past two decades. Most of the offenders were Pakistani men, while the victims were predominantly white British girls. Multiple governments have refrained from investigating the scandal, which gained mainstream attention after a series of reports by The Times in 2011. Furthermore, inquiries have revealed that various police departments attempted to conceal the gangs' existence.

During Starmer's leadership, the CPS faced harsh criticism for its decision not to prosecute a gang in Rochdale. During a 2015 inquiry, police in Rotherham reported that they believed the CPS was reluctant to bring charges against the accused.

Musk has labeled Starmer as “evil,” and the Financial Times speculates that he is orchestrating a campaign aimed at displacing the British prime minister.

Starmer’s approval ratings have plummeted further since Musk's recent criticisms regarding his handling of the rape gangs. A YouGov poll published on Monday shows that 63% of voters disapprove of his government’s performance, with only 16% expressing approval—a decline of two points since December.
