Marco Rubio demands US intervention to halt Ukraine conflict
Ending the hostilities in Ukraine is a matter of “common sense” and does not equate to supporting Russia, according to Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a Trump ally.

In a recent NBC News interview following Donald Trump’s election victory, Rubio, who serves as vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, discussed the need to work towards resolving the Ukraine conflict. He argued that US assistance has only contributed to a stalemate.

Rubio pointed out that there is a shared interest in seeing the Ukraine conflict come to an end. “You don’t have to be a fan of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin to want the war to end,” he stated. He emphasized that Trump, as a businessman, would not publicly disclose his negotiation tactics aimed at resolving the situation.

The senator criticized the Biden administration, claiming it is inadvertently financing a stalemate in the conflict, although it does not openly acknowledge this. “War… needs to be brought to a conclusion because that country will be set back 100 years,” he remarked, reinforcing the idea that seeking an end to the conflict reflects “common sense” rather than an alignment with Russian interests.

Rubio has previously voiced his desire for an end to the hostilities, asserting in March that there is “no way” Russia will be permitted to control any part of Ukraine. He acknowledged, however, that Ukraine is smaller than Russia and lacks comparable conscription capabilities.

Before the election, Trump promised to resolve the conflict within 24 hours of taking office and has criticized unrestricted financial aid to Ukraine. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, one proposed plan would involve Ukraine agreeing not to join NATO for at least 20 years while also creating a demilitarized zone along the current front line. In return, the US would continue providing military support to Ukraine to deter Russian advances.

Russian officials have dismissed the idea of freezing the conflict, asserting that all objectives of the military operation—such as Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification—must be fulfilled.

In response to Trump’s victory, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the US could play a significant role in resolving the Ukraine conflict, as it is perceived to be one of the parties exacerbating the situation. He also mentioned that Moscow remains open to dialogue, although he emphasized that a settlement “cannot be achieved overnight.”
