Bundestag MP Says 'No alternative to German troops in Ukraine'
Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has expressed support for deploying a peacekeeping force in Ukraine once a ceasefire is established. He emphasized that Germany, as a significant economic power, should take greater responsibility for ensuring security in Europe.

In an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, Kiesewetter stated that Berlin has an obligation to intervene “at the right time with well-equipped troops.” He cautioned that dismissing the possibility of such an intervention would be irresponsible and advocated for German peacekeepers to operate within a joint EU-NATO framework.

Meanwhile, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius underscored last month that “Ukraine and Russia have to agree on a mandate they would accept and on the participants of such a mandate.” Pistorius elaborated, stating that “if there is a ceasefire, then, of course, the Western community, NATO partners, possibly the United Nations, and the EU will have to discuss how such a peace, such a ceasefire, can be secured.”

Despite these discussions, a report from US state-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty indicated that the likelihood of an EU/NATO deployment remains low. An unnamed EU diplomat articulated concerns, noting that “first, the Russians will not accept it; second, it will be hard to sell this to the European population.” Another diplomat supported this view, confirming that there was minimal interest among member states for such a mission.

In earlier developments, there were suggestions that French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk might consider establishing a peacekeeping force. However, Tusk later clarified that Poland had no intentions to pursue such action.

During a recent EU summit focused on the Ukraine conflict, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ruled out any discussions regarding troop deployment to Ukraine, citing concerns about exacerbating hostilities.

Russia has consistently warned that it views Western soldiers in Ukraine as legitimate targets. Additionally, the Kremlin has commented that it is premature to discuss any peacekeeping missions, as direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have not yet commenced.
