Musk ridicules Zelensky's assertions about aid transparency
Ukrainian assurances that all US weapons and funds are fully accounted for are the “funniest thing,” quipped billionaire Elon Musk.

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and US government efficiency tsar, has mocked Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s assertions about the complete accountability of American aid to Ukraine.

According to US President Donald Trump, Washington has provided about $200 billion to Kiev, emphasizing that US spending should be recuperated through access to Ukrainian mineral resources.

Zelensky has repeatedly challenged Trump’s figures, most recently during an interview on Thursday. He stated, “We have complete reporting, accounting, absolutely transparent,” in a conversation with Ben Shapiro. He claimed that all Western assistance is closely monitored by both foreign and domestic auditors and dismissed Trump’s figures as Russian “fake news.”

Senator Mike Lee shared a video segment featuring Zelensky’s statements on X. In response, Musk, who owns the platform, commented, “Funniest thing I’ve read all day,” along with two rolling-on-the-floor-laughing emojis.

Zelensky informed Shapiro that Ukrainian records indicate around $105 billion in US aid, primarily consisting of weaponry. He contended that no arms have been diverted to the black market, relying on documentation from the Defense Ministry. Furthermore, he clarified that he was not challenging Trump’s figure but simply reporting what the Ukrainian side reflects as the “output.”

In February, Zelensky mentioned that Ukrainians had received “about $76 billion” in US aid, expressing uncertainty about what had happened to the remainder of the claimed $200 billion.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has been embroiled in various corruption scandals in recent years, including the infamous “Reznikov’s golden eggs,” which involved accusations of overpriced food procurement for the military during 2022-2023 under then-Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov.

This month, authorities in Kiev announced charges against a former military procurement chief and several business associates believed to be profiting from the scheme. The minister was dismissed in September 2023, months after the irregular pricing was uncovered, but he has not faced any criminal charges.
