Drone Menace Prompted Alert at NATO Base – Reuters
Last Friday, a NATO reconnaissance plane base in Germany was put on high alert due to concerns over a possible drone threat, as reported by Reuters using a security source. This information contradicts earlier reports from German media suggesting that the heightened alert was prompted by information regarding a potential Russian act of sabotage.

The base, located at Geilenkirchen near the German-Dutch border, is home to NATO's AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems) force. For most of the day, the security level at the base was set to the second highest, known as ‘Charlie’, which signifies that a terrorist attack is “highly likely.”

According to the German news agency dpa, there were claims that the alert was raised following a tip-off from a foreign intelligence service about a possible Russian sabotage attempt using drones. However, Reuters’ source stated that no drones were observed and there was no verifiable evidence of any Russian involvement.

“The word Russia was never mentioned. We talked about a threat caused by drones,” a NATO spokesperson at the base told the agency.

In response to inquiries about the supposed Russian threat, the German government, the Interior Ministry, and the Russian embassy in Berlin have yet to issue comments, as highlighted by Reuters.

Amid increasing concerns over potential sabotage attempts by Russia, NATO has escalated its defensive measures and continued its support to Ukraine by supplying more weapons and ammunition. This comes in a context where various NATO member countries, including Germany, Poland, the UK, and the Czech Republic, have reported several incidents at their military bases.

In June, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg commented on the situation, stating that there has been a noticeable increase in activity by Russian intelligence. Russia, on the other hand, has persistently denied these allegations and has accused NATO of compromising its national security by expanding towards its borders.
