Exposure of Romanian 'election interference' Reveals it as a Psy-Op by Pro-EU Liberal Party
Calin Georgescu’s unexpected victory in the first round of the presidential election has been annulled due to allegations of campaign ‘irregularities’ linked to funding from the country’s liberal party.

An investigation has found that claims suggesting Russian involvement in a Romanian social media campaign that aided independent candidate Calin Georgescu's initial success are unfounded. According to the media outlet Snoop, the probe revealed that Georgescu’s campaign was actually financed by the pro-Western National Liberal Party.

A critic of NATO and the EU, as well as an opponent of aid to Ukraine, Georgescu secured 22.94% of the vote, outperforming both liberal and social democratic contenders. Romania’s Constitutional Court swiftly annulled the election, pointing to intelligence documents that indicated 'irregularities' surrounding Georgescu’s campaign.

The court's documents alleged that Georgescu’s candidacy was improperly promoted on platforms such as TikTok, with assistance from paid influencers and extremist right-wing groups. There were also claims that his campaign might have received support from Russian interference, an assertion that Moscow has categorically rejected as "absolutely groundless."

According to Snoop, Romania’s tax authorities traced the financial flows of the campaign supporting Georgescu on TikTok, which were found to be funded by the pro-EU liberal PNL. The campaign was conducted by Kensington Communication, a political marketing consultancy.

The messages directed to influencers aimed to foster “a responsible attitude and a mature choice” among Romanian voters to ensure continuity in the nation’s “democratic path,” as stated by Snoop. Influencers were provided with scripts to extol the virtues of a future president without disclosing a name; however, some did comment below the videos, mentioning Georgescu.

“It is a shock to everyone that the public money that taxpayers had provided to the PNL was used to promote another candidate,” commented one expert involved in the investigation.

Kensington Communication has claimed that its campaign was “hijacked” or “cloned” and announced its intention to file a criminal complaint.

Georgescu, who has faced accusations of being “pro-Russian,” has lodged a lawsuit with the supreme court to contest the annulment of the election results. His lawyer characterized the proceedings as “a flagrant violation of the constitution” and likened it to “a coup d’état.” The first court hearing is set for December 23.

The investigation findings were released on Friday, just before Romanian President Klaus Iohannis’ term was set to expire and days ahead of the supreme court hearing regarding Georgescu's case. Iohannis had previously refused to vacate his office.
