CNN reports US Secret Service spends millions on recruitment ad

The US Secret Service has unveiled a new recruitment advertisement that cost the agency $2 million—twice its usual expenditure on ads, as reported by CNN on Sunday, citing insiders. The ad premiered during the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the NFL.

According to the report, the one-minute advertisement was directed by Hollywood filmmaker Michael Bay, renowned for blockbuster films such as ‘Armageddon,’ ‘Transformers,’ and ‘Pearl Harbor.’ Sources indicated that the clip was produced in a mere two weeks. CNN also stated it has filed a Freedom of Information Act records request to uncover the actual cost and budget associated with the ad.

The advertisement was broadcast during the pregame show inside the Superdome in New Orleans. A source close to the NFL noted that the ad time was reportedly secured at the last moment and donated, meaning the Secret Service did not incur additional expenses for its broadcast.

Commercial spots during the Super Bowl, the most-watched event in the United States, can run into the millions. Reports suggest that a 30-second ad during this year’s game exceeded $8 million.

The Secret Service subsequently shared the clip on its official X account. The ad depicts the US as a formidable power in need of equally formidable servicemen to safeguard its leaders. It includes footage of agents at various official events attended by US leaders over the years, with a voiceover mentioning that agents were securing this year's Super Bowl, which was attended by President Donald Trump—the first sitting US president to be present at the event.

“If you weren't able to attend tonight's big game, you missed a jumbotron highlight! For 160 years, our agency has been a witness to history; and since 1901, we’ve protected the most important people and events, including #SuperBowlLIX,” the Secret Service tweeted.

The video also features images that may evoke memories of the Secret Service’s most significant failures, including a speech by President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, as well as scenes from the July 2024 assassination attempt on Trump and footage of President Ronald Reagan, who was shot and injured in 1981.

The agency did not provide comments on the ad’s substantial expense, but Sean Curran, the newly appointed director of the Secret Service, told CNN that he had “empowered the team to identify a novel and expedient approach… to produce a representation of the men and women behind the Secret Service.” Curran, prior to his appointment, led Trump’s bodyguard detail during the former president’s campaign and was among those who rushed to protect him during the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Social media reactions to the ad were swift. While many commended the agency for its service record, some criticized the inclusion of its past failures and questioned the decision to highlight them in the advertisement. Others speculated about conspiracy theories alleging the agency's involvement in several assassination attempts on US leaders, while some expressed concern over the amount of taxpayer money that may have gone into producing the ad.
