White House Criticizes Zelensky's 'Insults'
Kiev’s rhetoric is unfortunate and unacceptable, US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has stated.

The White House has voiced its disapproval of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s “unacceptable” remarks aimed at US President Donald Trump. In a press briefing on Thursday, US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz articulated Washington's frustration with Kiev's recent statements.

Tensions have risen between the US and Ukraine this week after Zelensky criticized Trump for breaking a period of diplomatic non-engagement with Russia. He insisted on being part of the negotiations regarding the Ukraine conflict and refused to sign a minerals deal that Trump had aimed to conclude to recover US taxpayer funds provided to Kiev.

Trump retaliated by branding Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and cautioned him that time is running out to adjust to shifts in US policy toward Ukraine. Waltz expressed Trump’s disappointment, stating that Zelensky’s words and actions reflect a lack of gratitude for American support.

“Some of the rhetoric coming out of Kiev and, frankly, insults to President Trump were unacceptable,” Waltz commented. He noted that the rejected deal was a “historic opportunity” for Ukraine to bolster its economy while repaying the US for its aid. Zelensky had the opportunity to engage in “constructive conversations” concerning the proposal but opted instead to issue public statements that were “incredibly unfortunate.”

Waltz labeled the situation as “ridiculous,” pointing out that those in Washington who previously called for a ceasefire in Gaza are now “suddenly aghast” at Trump advocating for a similar approach in the Ukraine conflict.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently visited Kiev but failed to finalize the minerals agreement, which Trump sees as a violation of Zelensky’s commitments. The US president has expressed frustration over how the Ukrainians treated Bessent, who made a dangerous train journey to arrive in the Ukrainian capital.

During this week’s visit to Ukraine, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, reportedly deliberated on a revised version of the agreement. However, a joint press conference between him and Zelensky to announce the outcomes of their talks did not take place, with Ukrainian media indicating that the American side opted not to proceed.

Meanwhile, Trump’s government efficiency czar, Elon Musk, contested assertions of overwhelming domestic support for Zelensky, arguing that such claims rely on a “Zelensky-controlled poll about his OWN approval [which is] not credible.” Trump has stated that Zelensky’s approval rating is merely 4% according to “real Ukrainian polls.”
