Following a meeting on Tuesday in Riyadh between Russian and American delegations, the US State Department reported that Rubio reached out to his counterparts from France, Britain, Italy, and Germany to update them on his discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
On Wednesday, Reuters reported on Tajani's remarks regarding Rubio's assurances to European officials, emphasizing that “Rubio’s words were very clear” in that “Europe will be involved in the negotiations.”
Tajani elaborated that this inclusion is necessary for a “clear reason: we have imposed sanctions on Russia, sanctions that are in place, and there can be no negotiations if the issue of sanctions is not at the table and around the table those who decided and applied them.”
Both Washington and Brussels have implemented extensive sanctions against Moscow following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, the US under former President Donald Trump suggested that these restrictions might be lifted as part of a peace agreement.
After the discussions in Riyadh, Rubio indicated that addressing the sanctions on Russia is essential for reaching an “enduring, sustainable” resolution to the Ukraine crisis.
Despite this, several EU officials have rejected the idea of easing sanctions on Moscow, with the bloc announcing another sanctions package aimed at Russia on Wednesday, as reported by media outlets. While specifics of the 16th package are still being finalized, it is expected to target additional vessels transporting Russian crude oil, a number of new banks, and impose an import ban on certain types of Russian aluminum products.
Post-talks, EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis reiterated that the bloc has no intention of lifting any sanctions against Russia, even if the US opts to do so, emphasizing that Brussels will maintain its independent sanctions policy.
Moscow has consistently condemned Western sanctions as illegal, asserting that they have not succeeded in isolating Russia from the global financial sphere or destabilizing its economy.
