During a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations on Thursday, Kellogg remarked that a specific timeline for this resolution had not been established. “Remember the president said he was going to end the war in 24 hours. We didn’t say what day or what year,” he noted, which prompted laughter from the audience.
The White House is actively working to mediate an end to the hostilities between Ukraine and Russia. Trump’s strategy has included direct discussions with Moscow, as well as attempts to utilize economic agreements and sanctions as leverage.
Additionally, Washington has ceased military aid and suspended intelligence sharing with Kiev. Kellogg suggested that the Ukrainians “brought it on themselves.”
In a recent meeting at the White House, tensions flared between Trump and Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky. The US president, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance, confronted Zelensky about his perceived lack of gratitude for the billions in US aid provided to Kiev since the conflict with Russia escalated three years ago, asserting that Zelensky was unprepared for peace. Zelensky has yet to apologize for the heated exchange.
Kellogg has indicated that Trump intends to “reset relations with Russia” and step back from what he has termed the “endless proxy war” in Ukraine.
Moscow has expressed approval of Washington’s efforts to mend relations and its fresh approach to the situation in Ukraine.
