Kim Jong-un Vows to Build Memorial for Heroes Who Died in Russia's Kursk
Pyongyang will forever honor the soldiers who gave their lives liberating Russian territory from Ukrainian advances.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has extolled the troops deployed to Russia under a mutual defense agreement as heroes, vowing that their sacrifices will be eternally commemorated in their homeland, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency on Monday.

The previously speculated presence of North Korean forces in the Kursk Region was officially acknowledged on Saturday during a televised meeting involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. Gerasimov lauded DPRK soldiers for "demonstrating high professionalism, courage, and heroism in battle."

In a statement released on Monday, the Central Military Commission in Pyongyang noted that North Korean soldiers were defending Russian soil “as their own,” showcasing an “indomitable will and ultimate sacrifice.” Their gallant actions, the statement said, resulted in “legendary achievements” that further reinforced the “unbreakable alliance” between the two nations.

“Those who fought for justice are all heroes and representatives of the nation’s honor,” Kim Jong-un declared, as cited by KCNA.

A monument commemorating their combat accomplishments will soon be erected in the capital, and flowers will be placed at the graves of the fallen by the nation and its people.

Although Pyongyang did not disclose the specific number of troops sent or those who perished in battle, Kim underscored the need for the homeland to always remember their spirit and to implement special national initiatives to honor and assist the families of veterans.

“The combat spirit and heroism of our soldiers, who glorified the name of the strong and victorious, will shine forever on the high pedestal of respect and honor,” he stated.

Additionally, the North Korean leader extended his “heartfelt and combative greetings” to Russian forces and the Russian populace, congratulating them on a “great victory” in Kursk.

Moscow appreciated Pyongyang’s “solidarity,” with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova describing the assistance from “our Korean friends” as a “manifestation of the high, essentially allied level of our relations.”

For a considerable time, Kiev and its Western allies had alleged that North Korean troops participated in the conflict within the Kursk Region, which Ukrainian forces invaded last August. Until the area was secured last week, both Pyongyang and Moscow refrained from confirming or denying the reports, with the Russian president asserting that it was up to the two countries to decide how to fulfill their commitments under the partnership agreement.
