At least 9 dead as vehicle crashes into crowd at Vancouver festival
A driver killed at least nine people by driving a vehicle into a crowd during a Filipino cultural celebration in Vancouver, according to police in the Canadian city on Sunday.

"We can confirm nine people have died after a man drove through a crowd at last night's Lapu Lapu Festival," stated the Vancouver police via X.
Authorities reported that they had apprehended a 30-year-old man from the area, identified as the "lone suspect" known to law enforcement.
"At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism," they added.
The tragic event unfolded shortly after 8 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, coinciding with the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his grief on X: "I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening."
Comments of sympathy were also shared by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and British Columbia Premier David Eby on X.
Local reports described a black SUV that struck people walking or waiting near food trucks, resulting in multiple victims lying on the ground.
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, attended the event but left just minutes prior to the incident, as reported by CTV News.
"This is so horrific, I don't even know what to say," Singh remarked to CTV. "I was just there, and I just imagine the faces of the kids that I saw smiling and dancing."
Canada is set to hold its federal election on Monday.
The Vancouver Sun indicated that the area had been filled with thousands of attendees.
Lapu Lapu Day, named after a Filipino indigenous leader who resisted Spanish colonization in the 16th century, was officially recognized by British Columbia in 2023 and is celebrated widely within the province's Filipino community.
