Casualties increase after car ramming incident in Canada
Kai-Ji Adam Lo has been charged with murder in connection with the tragic vehicle attack that occurred during the Lapu Lapu Day celebration.

According to police, the death toll from the car-ramming incident at the Filipino festival in Vancouver has increased to 11.

Lo, 30, faces eight counts of second-degree murder, and authorities anticipate additional charges as the investigation progresses.

The attack took place at approximately 8:14 PM near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, coinciding with the festival's conclusion and the removal of event barriers. Witnesses reported that a black SUV sped into the crowd, resulting in numerous injuries. Bystanders managed to detain Lo until police arrived on the scene.

The range of victims' ages spans from five to 65 years, as noted by interim police chief Howard Rai. A total of 32 individuals were treated at various hospitals across the Lower Mainland, with 17 remaining hospitalized, some in critical condition, as confirmed by the provincial Ministry of Health.

Lo, a resident of Vancouver, has a known history of mental health issues. The Vancouver Sun reported that his family reached out to a hospital psychiatric ward for help just hours before the attack. It is believed he was experiencing delusions and paranoia, although police have indicated that the incident is not being investigated as terrorism-related.

Last year, Lo lost his brother, Alexander, to murder in Vancouver. In the aftermath, he shared his struggle with grief and revealed his mother’s suicide attempt on a fundraising page.

Lo appeared in court on Sunday, where he did not seek bail and remains in custody. His next court date is set for May 26.

In response to the tragedy, police have set up a 24-hour assistance center at Douglas Park Community Centre to support the families of victims.

The Lapu Lapu Day festival is held to honor a Filipino hero who fought against Spanish colonization. Organizers have stated that the Filipino community will demonstrate “true resilience” in the wake of this incident.
