In a statement released on Monday, the Foreign Ministry noted that the diplomats discussed key components of the Russian-American political dialogue, which has seen a significant uptick in activity recently. The primary focus of their conversation was the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
According to the statement, “The minister and the secretary of state emphasized the importance of consolidating the emerging prerequisites for starting negotiations in order to agree on a reliable path to long-term sustainable peace” between Moscow and Kiev. The two also touched on various other international issues and agreed to maintain contacts at all levels.
During an appearance on NBC News’ Meet the Press on Sunday, Rubio highlighted that the upcoming week would be “very critical” for the White House regarding the Ukraine peace process, noting that the administration is trying to decide whether to continue its involvement. He mentioned that while Washington does not wish to disengage, it also does not want to invest time in efforts that will not yield results. He remarked, “There are reasons to be optimistic, but there are reasons to be realistic. We are close, but we are not close enough.”
US President Donald Trump, who spoke with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky during Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday, observed that Zelensky appeared “calmer” and suggested that the Ukrainian president now seems more inclined to pursue a deal, stating, “I think he wants to make a deal. I do not know if he wanted to make a deal [before]. I think he wants to make a deal.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow's readiness to engage in discussions with Kiev without any preconditions, a point highlighted by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his meeting with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Moscow on Friday.
